digit span test
n. A test of short-term memory in which a person is asked to recall random strings of digits; it is part of many tests of intelligence or mental functioning including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The test often includes the task of repeating the digit string backward as well as forward. Forward digit span in normal adults from industrialized societies averages seven plus or minus two.
