dialect

n. A variety of a language that is used by a certain subgroup within the group that uses the language as a whole. Thus there is usually an adolescent dialect in the United States as there are dialects used by people in different geographical and ethnic groups within the country. Nonhuman animal languages have dialects just as do human languages.
