depressive disorders

A family of disorders, all of which involve a state of mind characterized by negative mood, loss of interest in usual activities, low energy, pessimism, unrealistically negative thoughts about self and the future, social withdrawal, and sometimes sleep and appetite disturbances. These disorders include major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and depressive disorder not otherwise specified (NOS).
