n. An individual's specific desire to return to a preorganic state. A part of the more comprehensive death instinct proposed by Sigmund Freud, this is most closely associated with the part of the mind that houses primitive desires, the id. From a Freudian perspective, self-destructive behaviors are associated with a strong id, and therefore with the desire to die.
