content, latent and manifest

n. In Freudian interpretation of dreams, the dream is a construction in which an unconscious (latent) content is masked by a morally acceptable (manifest) content through the substitution of associated images. Thus an image of desiring to have sex with one's father might (latent content) be masked by an image of desiring to have sex with one's spouse, who has some characteristics that remind one of one's father (manifest content).
