confabulation
n. False statements made by persons who have memory lapses so as to fill in conversations when they are unable to recall accurate information. The statements are usually believed by the person who makes them. Confabulation is characteristic of Korsakoff's syndrome and senile dementia and occasionally appears in children and adults who are pressured for information they lack but believe they should know, as when they are witnesses in court.
