cone

n. A cone-shaped retinal light receptor cell primarily located in the fovea of the human eye which differentially reacts to brightness in general or to specific wavelengths of colored light, which is the basis for color perception. Cones have higher thresholds for reaction than do rods, which predominate in the periphery of the retina, and so the central area of human vision is less accurate under very dim lighting conditions.
