cluster sample
n. A sampling procedure in which a population is divided into clusters, a sample of clusters is selected, and a sample is drawn from the selected clusters and used to estimate population characteristics. This procedure is usually cheaper and more practical than a random sample would be, but error is introduced in creating and selecting the clusters and so the sample is likely to be less accurate than a true random sample.
