chunk

n. A mental unit of which about seven can be held in short-term memory. All information can be organized in various ways, and so the amount of information in any mental process depends on its organization. As an example, people frequently remember well known area codes as a single chunk despite their having three digits, while most digits are remembered as a chunk.
