character disorder

n. A pervasive and enduring pattern of dynamic psychophysical processes, subjective experience, perceptual distortion, and behavior which is markedly maladaptive within a culture. These patterns tend to develop before adulthood, persist in the face of punishment, and lead to personal unhappiness and interpersonal difficulties. Also called personality disorder.
