catastrophe theory

n. A field of mathematics that formally describes processes in which small and gradual changes in parameter are associated with large and abrupt changes in another parameter such as when a pathway leads over the edge of a cliff. Many attempts have been made to apply this to psychological and social phenomena, such as a person's having a nervous breakdown and herd animals' changing direction.
