n. 1. In psychoanalysis, little boys fear that their father wants to castrate them, a projection onto the father of the son's desire to castrate the father so as to render him impotent in a competition for the mother's love so that the son can become the mother's lover. 2. In Henry Murray's psychology, it was literally a fear of castration due to parental suppression of childhood masturbation.
