blood-brain barrier

n. A semipermeable membrane lining capillaries which supply blood to the brain which blocks most antigens and large molecules, including many drugs, from entering the brain and thus protects the brain. Lipid- (fat-) soluble chemicals usually cross the barrier more easily than do water-soluble molecules.
