behavioral contagion

n. A quick copying of behavior of a few individuals by those nearby which spreads as a wave among a group often with little conscious reflection by the copiers. This usually occurs when a new behavior is performed by high-status individuals and is seen as immediately responsive to unmet needs of individuals in the group.
