Babinski reflex

n. Also referred to as the plantar response, the Babinski reflex is a newborn reflex whereby the stimulation of the sole of the foot from heel to base of the toes (or vice versa) causes the newborn's toes to fan and curl. This reflex gives an indication of neurological functioning and should disappear within the first few months. If the Babinski reflex is seen in an older child or adult, it is taken as a sign of a problem with the central nervous system.
