autonomy, functional
n. The tendency for ideas or habits to become independent of their origin. As an example, if one forms the habit of brushing one's teeth to escape parental reprimand as a child, then, by the time one is in middle age, brushing one's teeth is likely to be independent of parental evaluation and to have its own motivational force and place in the individual's intellectual organization.
