associationism
n. Any of numerous theories which suppose that simple mental associations are the building blocks of all or almost all mental processes, with the most complex built up of numerous simpler associations. The theory was first suggested by Aristotle about 2,400 years ago and elaborated by English philosophers and more recently by such diverse schools of psychology as psychoanalysis and behaviorism and by some cognitive psychologists and psycholinguists.
