area postrema

n. A brain area at the top and back of the fourth ventricle with a high density of blood vessels in which the blood-brain barrier is more permeable than in most areas of the brain, allowing toxic substances to enter more easily. Because it also controls the vomiting reflex, it allows quicker vomiting after ingestion of toxins than would be possible otherwise.
