analysis of variance

n. (ANOVA) A calculation of the ratios of within- to between-group differences in a dependent variable in two or more groups defined by independent variables. This is used to test hypotheses about differences among the groups with the object of being able to attribute any such differences to effects of the independent variable(s) on the dependent variable.
