Taking action which results in one’s own death for the benefit of others, as when a soldier takes on a suicide mission for the benefit of society or an elderly Inuit adult whose physical degeneration puts his or her family in danger voluntarily leaves the group to face certain death alone so the family will not have to care for her or him. In Japan altruistic suicide has been common.
