algorithmic-heuristic theory
n. A theory of learning in which the mental processes involved in problem solving are broken down into algorithmic, heuristic, and semialgorithmic and semiheuristic steps. Students are taught to discover the necessary steps in solving a problem by learning to break down a problem into its mental components, selecting an algorithmic or heuristic approach for each component, and then combining the steps to reach a solution.
