additive counterfactual

n. A mental event in which a person mentally adds an action to what has actually occurred. For example, a spurned lover might think, “If only I had given her roses, then she would have gone out with me.” Additive counterfactuals function to lessen the negative emotions after failure and to plan for future and, ideally, successful courses of action.
