acute pain

n. Pain which appears relatively quickly and does not last a very long time. Acute pain is opposed to chronic pain, which may last for years or for the lifetime of the person. An example of acute pain is the pain of a broken leg, which usually appears nearly instantaneously in an accident and lasts only until the leg begins to heal.
