actual neurosis

n. In psychoanalysis, anxiety and maladaptive behavior that arise from pressures in the real world rather than from repressed childhood memories, as is usually the case. For example, a person who is given more work than he/she can do by the boss may have difficulty sleeping and may begin forgetting to do things which are necessary to do his/her work, such as a carpenter’s forgetting to buy nails.
