acoustic cue

n. 1. Any acoustic characteristic of speech that is used in understanding what has been said. As an example, a chief difference between the sounds for the t and d in die and tie is primarily voice onset time, or the interval of time that passes before sound starts from the vocal cords; in t it is delayed and in d it is almost immediate. 2. Any acoustic character used as an aid in remembering; particularly remembering a word.
