vigilance

n. The state of being alert and watchful of the environment or a particular part of the environment. This is usually measured experimentally using reaction time or the likelihood of detecting a signal. In ethology and social psychology, vigilance includes increased alertness toward particular sorts of important environmental or social situations, such as watching for predators or the behavior of status rivals.
