n. 1. Any variable not measured or controlled in a research study that affects the outcome variable and renders interpretation of variation in the dependent variable problematic. 2. In learning theory, a theoretical variable which affects the relationship between independent and dependent variables and which is inferred from the observed relationships between independent and dependent variables.
