signal detection theory

n. A psychophysical approach to measuring the process of detecting signals of various strengths in the presence of noise. It assumes that both internal and external noise interferes with the detection of signal stimuli and that the receiver of the signals sets a stimulus magnitude level for deciding as to the presence of a signal, which determines the number of hits, misses, false alarms, and false positives that will occur at any given signal-tonoise ratio.
