prisoner's dilemma

n. A game frequently used in game theory in which each player must choose between an option that maximizes his or her own gain at the expense of his/her fellow players and an option which returns a lesser but positive return for all players. The name of the game is derived from a police tactic of giving immunity or a reduced sentence to one member of a suspected criminal group who will testify against his/her alleged accomplices.
