primary visual cortex

n. Cortical area of projection of the visual information (V1). It corresponds to the striate cortex (Brodmann's area 17) situated in and around the calcarine fissure in the occipital lobe. It receives information from the lateral geniculate body of the thalamus through the optic radiation. Unilateral damage is associated with contralateral hemianopsia and bilateral damage with cortical blindness. – AA
