polarization
n. 1. A difference in electric potential across a cell membrane such as occurs in nerve and muscle cells, whose depolarization leads to nerve impulses and contractions. 2. A phenomenon in subgroups in which individuals' opinions grow more extreme when there is conflict between the subgroups or the attention of the groups focuses on the differences between the groups. 3. A state of light transmission in which the light follows parallel paths within a plane.
