monogamy

n. 1. A reproductive relationship in which a male and a female mate exclusively with one another. In the past this has been confused with pair bonding, in which couples of various species mate and cooperate in nest building or similar parenting activities but which genetic studies have found are often not monogamous. 2. Marriage to only one spouse at a time.
