mitosis
n. The process of cell division in which a cell splits into two identical daughter cells with the same genetic makeup as the original cell which is characteristic of many single-celled animals as well as much growth in more complex organisms. It contrasts with meiosis, which is the division of cells into gametes or sex cells into two sperm or ova cells each with half the genetic material from the parent cell.
