n. A form of backward masking in which a target stimulus, usually a dot, is presented briefly and then quickly followed by a nearby masking stimulus, often a circle around the dot, which has the effect of masking or distorting perception of the original stimulus. This demonstrates that backward masking is a cognitive, not a sensory process.
