n. (mRNA) A short-lived form of ribonucleic acid that is formed as a mirror image of a strand of DNA in a cell nucleus and then, after inactive regions are removed, is used as a template by ribosomes to manufacture proteins in the cell. mRNA is broken down quickly after its use, which helps regulate protein production.
