mental rotation

n. An experimental task in which subjects are asked to make judgments about visual images which require rotation from their presented position in order to make accurate judgments. There is an inference that the mind creates a visual image and rotates it to arrive at a correct answer based on the observation that the time it takes to respond correctly is proportional to the angle through which the object has to be rotated in order to make the correct judgment.
