matched pairs

n. A research procedure in which pairs of subjects are selected on the basis of being the same on one or more important variables and are then randomly assigned to one of two differently treated groups in an experiment. The purpose is to ensure that the variables on which the subjects are matched do not interfere with the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable(s).
