marijuana

n. The plant species Cannabis sativa, whose leaves and flowers contain intoxicating can- nabinoid chemicals and especially delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which produce mild euphoria, relaxation, and increased appetite and attention to sensory stimuli and inhibit memory when smoked or ingested. Some persons experience increased anxiety when using cannabis and hallucinations and other sensory distortions occur at high dose levels. Cannabis is not generally considered addictive. Commonly called marijuana, marihuana, or hemp, it is grown in many areas of the world for its fiber, which makes strong rope and woven products.
