law of parsimony

n. A scientific principle that places preference on the least complex explanation for an observation, theory, or phenomenon. Often referred to as the simplicity rule, the law of parsimony is based upon Ockham's razor, which states that entities should not be multiplied needlessly. As such, when there are two or more competing theories that make the same prediction, the simplest explanation is preferred.
