n. A self-image in which oneself as an individual with unique dispositions and history is emphasized, as opposed to an interdependent self-image, in which one's relationships with others are emphasized. This is often considered one of the chief cultural differences between people from Asian and European- American cultures, although this difference is quite variable among cultures from each of the continents.
