n. 1. In philosophy, any approach in which either some universal or mental idea is more basic or real than an individual object. Thus, a book is an example of ideal bookness and is a book to the degree it is an embodiment of the ideal book. 2. A deep commitment to acting out a moral, political, or religious belief or belief system.
