hippocampal formation

n. A portion of the limbic cortex located in the temporal lobe of the forebrain. This formation includes the dentate gyrus, longitudinal striae, as well as the hippocampus itself. Stimulation of the hippocampal formation can produce lasting synaptic changes called long-term potentiation. These changes, which can be produced in many regions of the hippocampal formation, are associated with learning and the development of memory.
