n. A perceptual attribute or quality that emerges from the organization of sensory elements but is not reducible to the sum of those elements. A melody is a good example of this. The melody is not in the notes as the melody's key can be changed so none of the notes are the same, and the original notes can be rearranged so as to form a different melody.
