generalization gradient
n. A graphic representation of the decline in the magnitude of response by an organism to stimuli as they vary from the conditioned stimulus. Thus if a dog is conditioned to salivate when it hears a bell ring, then the dog will salivate to another bell but less than it will to the original bell. The reduction in salivation depends on how similar the new bell is to the original bell.
