general intelligence
n. (g) A theoretical construct that assumes there is a generalized mental ability underlying the various skills and abilities measured by traditional intelligence tests. Based on factor analysis, the general intelligence (g) factor gains support from the positive correlations typically found on the subtest scores of intelligence tests. These positive correlations are then attributed to the existence of a larger factor, general intelligence, which is primarily responsible for all subtest abilities. Despite a large body of evidence supporting biological and social correlates of the general intelligence factor, the existence of the g factor is quite controversial. Opponents of the g factor challenge the existence of a unitary intelligence and criticize the role of traditional intelligence testing in measuring cognitive potential.
