GABA receptor complex
n. The structure in some neurons that has three types of receptor sites, to one of which GABA binds; another binds sedative and hypnotic drugs such as the barbiturates and is blocked by convulsive drugs; the third binds benzodiazepines. This complex is generally inhibitory in its effect on the neuron and on neurons farther away in the pathway to which the neuron is attached, while convulsant drugs promote stimulation in the same neurons and pathways.
