floor effect

n. In measurement and statistics, a lower limit of a variable which skews the distribution of scores. Thus a test with a floor effect is too difficult for the sample on which it is being used, as many scores accumulate at the bottom end of the range of scores and make impossible a discrimination among the low scorers on the characteristic being measured.
