fertilization

n. The process of union of an ovum and a sperm cell which produces a zygote. This occurs in the fallopian tubes in human females and can occur inside or outside the body in other species. In salmon, for instance, eggs are laid in the gravel of a river bottom and then fertilized by a sperm from a cloud of semen ejected by a male salmon over the eggs.
