feedback loop

n. In cybernetic theory, the communication between a sensor and an on-off switch which controls a mechanism which affects whatever the sensor measures. As an example, a thermostat has a thermometer which feeds back temperature to the on-off switch, which turns a furnace on or off, thus raising the temperature or allowing it to cool, depending on whether the thermometer is above or below a preset limit.
