feature detector

n. A hypothetical neural structure that responds to stimulation from a particular kind of feature in the external world. Thus the visual system is supposed to have bar and edge detectors and a system for recognizing facial features, while the auditory system is supposed to have detectors for particular aspects of speech sounds such as voice onset time.
